  • Description

President Mobutu of Zaire arrived in London on Tuesday (11th December) for a four-day state visit.

President Mobutu was greeted by the Duke and Duchess of Kent when his plane touched down at Gatwick Airport near London. Later, the Queen and other members of the British Royal Family met him at Victoria Station.

A 21-gun salute rang out across the Station as the President stepped off his train. This was followed by a State Drive through the city to Buckingham Palace.

President Mobutu's visit follows a similar one by General Gowon, the Nigerian leader. It is regarded by observers as an indication that Britain sees Zaire and Nigeria emerging as the two most powerful countries in Africa.

President Mobutu is believed anxious to develop stronger ties with big industrial nations. He is expected to press for more British investment in his country's industry.
