Background: THE ELEVENTH MACAO GRAND PRIX HELD ON THE GUIA CIRCUIT ON NOVEMBER 15, WAS MARRED BY A SERIES OF INCIDENTS. ALL THE DRIVERS ESCAPED WITH MINOR INJURIES. IN ALL, FOURTEEN CARS WERE ENTERED.

HONGKONG'S POLICE OFFICER, ALBERT POON, WON THE 60-LAP 224-MILE RACE IN HIS LOTUS 23 WITH THE TIME OF THREE HOURS 40 MINUTES 44.2 SECONDS.

ALBERT POON WHO WON THE JOHORE (SOUTHERN MALAYA) AND MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX -- CRUISES HOME TO AN EASY WIN AFTER MECHANICAL TROUBLE AND MISHAPS HAD COMPELLED THE EARLY RETIREMENT OF HIS CLOSEST RIVALS.

HE FINISHED MORE THAN A LAP IN FRONT OF JOHN KIRK, WHO TOOK SECOND PLACE IN A LOTUS ELAN, THIRD WAS HONGKONG'S STEVE HOLLAND IN A LOTUS 18.

ALBERT POON, WHO WAS NEVER BACK THAN THIRD AT ANY TIME, WAS LEFT TO HIMSELF OUT IN FRONT WHEN, FIRST, PHILIPPINES MILLIONAIRE RACING DRIVER ARSENIO LAUREL, WINNER OF THE LAST TWO GRAND PRIXS, AND THEN BILL WYLIE OF HONGKONG HAD TO RETIRE.

IT WAS WHILE DISPUTING THE LEAD WITH THESE TWO DRIVERS IN THE EARLY STAGES THAT POON BROKE THE 3.8-MILE LAP RECORD WITH A TIME OF THREE MINUTES 5.4 SECONDS -- ONE SECOND BETTER THAT LAUREL'S MARK SET LAST YEAR.

INTERVIEWED AFTER THE RACE, POON SAID HE DROVE "ACCORDING TO PLAN." HE SAID HE WOULD GIVE HIS 625 POUNDS STERLING PRIZE MONEY TO HIS WIFE.
