  • Description

With a mind-blowing variety of colours and styles, New York menswear designers this week previewed the fashions which the well dressed man-about-town will be wearing next spring.

Variety was the keynote. Proletarian peasant ensembles competed for attention with the sort of military fashions favoured by the more severe dictators. The odd grey-flannel suit was eclipsed by flamboyant, peacock-coloured designs in fur, leather, crepe, velour and even satin.

The organisers of the show admitted that today's styles are dictated more by the taste of the individual than by the whims of fashion houses.

But the designers did lay down one dictate. Knee-length coats are out. Today's fashion-conscious male, no matter how individual his taste, will have to settle for midi-or maxi-length coats.
