The candidate, Mr. Renny Ottolina, was also one of the country's beat known television personalities and a commentator whose programmes have been shown in most Latin American countries.
SYNOPSIS: The plane, flying from Maiquetia to Margarita, was taking Mr. Ottolina and four members of his campaign team to a dinner at which he was to be guest of honour.
Mr. Ottolina, who continued his television work during he campaign, entered politics jus over a year ago as the leader of a group of Independents. He was widely regarded as one of the most formidable candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Reports that the plane carrying Mr. Ottolina and his colleagues was in difficulties came 25 minutes after take-off. At first it was thought they had made an emergency landing. Then, two fishermen told he authorities they had seen a small plane plunge into the sea. Immediately President Perez ordered the Ministry of Defence to mount a search. A helicopter and spotter planes were sent into he area, but no wreckage was seen. Rescue units continued the search, but by the weekend it was presumed all on board the plane had been lost.
