  • Description

Japan has been testing its atmosphere for radio-activity following the atmospheric nuclear bomb test by The People's Republic of China on Wednesday (June 27). Two F-86 jet aircraft of Japan's Self-Defence Force were fitted with dust filters on Friday (June 29) and flew to thirty thousand (10,000 metres) feet to collect atmospheric samples.

Analysis of the samples later the same day showed the radio-activity level to be sixteen times greater than normal -- but the analysts pointed out that this would have no harmful effects on human or animal life.

The Japanese Government has protested to The People's Republic of China about the three-megaton test. A protest note was passed to the Chinese embassy in Tokyo on Friday, but it was rejected. The Chinese government claimed the test was carried out for the purpose of defence use only.
