    Australian Sir Howard Florey - 62-year-old Professor of Pathology at Oxford University - was recently elected President of Britain's Royal Society in succession to Sir Cyril Hinshlewood.

    Sir Howard - seen in his new capacity at the Society in London - has made valuable contributions to experimental pathology and medical science and is best known for his works in connection with the isolation and detailed study of penicillin. He shared the Nobel Prize for this in 1945
    The Royal Society is the longest established scientific society in Britain and one of the oldest in Europe. It is thought to have been founded in 1660, but a nucleus had been in existence for some years earlier.
