  • Description

A memorial service to victims of the 1944-1949 Communist rebellion in Greece was held at the Gendarmerie Regiment Barracks, Athens, Dec.10. King Paul, Crown Prince Constantine, Cabinet members, Chiefs of General Staffs, political and church dignitaries and thousands of people attended the service.

It was regarded in Athens as an answer to recent Communist activities in Greece.

With the help of British troops of General Scobie, the Gendarmes resisted the strong rebel forces and saved Athens from being occupied completely. Between October, 1944, and May,1946, 613 security officers and men were massacred and 52,373 civilians were executed by Communist guerillas.
