  • Description

COLOMBIAN MARCO ANTONIO NAVAS FAILED HIS WORLD ENDURANCE CYCLING ATTEMPT AT QUEZON CITY, NEAR MANILA, WHEN HE GAVE UP AFTER 114 HOURS, 20 MINUTES ON SUNDAY. NAVAS, 39, COULD NOT BEAT THE WORLD RECORD OF 125 HOURS NON-STOP CYCLING.

TEN CYCLISTS ENTERED THE ENDURANCE ATTEMPT, BUT AFTER TWO DAYS ONLY SIX WERE LEFT. AFTER FOUR DAYS NAVAS WAS ON HIS OWN.

NAVAS' DEFEAT MAY HAVE STEMMED FROM THE FACT THAT HE COULD NOT KEEP COOL IN THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE RACE. A LOCAL NEWSPAPER REPORTED THAT HE ASKED HIS ASSISTANTS TO HOSE HIM DOWN, BUT BECAUSE OF LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES THEY WERE UNABLE TO OBTAIN A HOSE.

HE GAVE UP THE ATTEMPT ON SUNDAY IN A BLAZING NOON-DAY SUN.

EARLIER VETERAN FILIPINO CYCLIST, 50-YEAR-OLD SEVILLANO PAMA, HAD BEEN PUTTING UP A GOOD SHOWING. OTHER EARLY STAYERS INCLUDED NICANOR NIODAO, 26, JOSE MORING JR, AND JOHNNY PATRICIO, 39.

INTERMITTENT RAINS ALSO HAMPERED THE CYCLISTS. THEY WERE GIVEN RAINCOATS DURING PERIODS OF DRIZZLE AND WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE DIRT TRACK AND RIDE ON ASPHALT.
