  • Description

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT THIS WEEK INVITED NEWSMEN TO VISIT BIEN HOA PRISONER OF WAR CAMP WHERE CAPTURED MEMBERS OF THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMED FORCES AND YOUNG VIETCONG HELPERS ARE HELD.

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE AUTHORITIES PUT THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PRISONERS, BOTH NORTH VIETNAMESE AND VIETCONG, AT 4,840, INCLUDING 37 FEMALES, IN THE FOUR COMPOUNDS AT BIEN HOA.

MANY OF THE PRISONERS ARE INJURED, SOME 1,400 OF THEM BEING AMPUTEES. THE AUTHORITIES SAY MANY HAVE NO RELATIVES IN THE SOUTH, AND HAVE LITTLE HOPE OF RELEASE SINCE NORTH VIETNAM REFUSES TO ACCEPT THEM.

ALSO IN THE CAMP ARE SOME 1,800 BOYS AGED BETWEEN 12 AND 17, ACCUSED OF HELPING THE VIETCONG INSURGENTS, USUALLY AS MESSAGE CARRIERS OR AMMUNITION RUNNERS. SOME GET OCCASIONAL VISITS FROM PARENTS OR RELATIVES. THE AUTHORITIES SAY THEY WILL BE RELEASED "WHEN THE WAR IS OVER", AND IN THE MEANTIME THEY ARE GIVEN SCHOOLING BY MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY.

THE PRISONERS, WHOSE NAMES ARE NOTIFIED TO THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS, ARE ALLOWED TO RECEIVE LIMITED PRESENTS OF MONEY FROM RELATIVES, AND ARE PAID FOR WORK DONE OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND; THE MONEY CAN BE EXCHANGED FOR TICKETS TO BUY GOODS WITHIN THE CAMP.
