    REPRESENTATIVES OF GHANA, TOGO, AND DAHOMEY SIGNED AN AGREEMENT ON FRIDAY (22 AUGUST) FOR THE SALE OF ELECTRICITY FROM GHANA'S AKOSOMBO DAM ON THE RIVER VOLTA TO THE TWO CONTIGUOUS COUNTRIES.

    MR. E. N. OMABOE, GHANA'S COMMISSIONER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS,SIGNED ON BEHALF OF HIS GOVERNMENT, WHILE MR. ALEX MIVEDOR, TOGO'S MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS, AND MR. EMILE PARAISO, DAHOMEY'S MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS, POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS, SIGNED ON BEHALF OF THEIRS.

    CANADA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO GHANA AND AMBASSADOR TO TOGO, MR. DOUGLAS DICKS, ATTENDED THE SIGNING CEREMONY. CANADA HAS FINANCED THE SURVEYING OF THE 180-MILE (290-KILOMETRE) TRANSMISSION LINE THAT WILL CARRY THE POWER FROM AKOSOMBO TO LOME, IN TOGO, AND COTONOU,IN DAHOMEY.

    THE SIGNING OF THE AGREEMENT MARKS THE END OF FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS STARTED IN FEBRUARY 1967 BETWEEN THE THREE SISTER AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    WHEN FINISHED, THE PROJECT WILL FORM THE NUCLEUS OF A WEST AFRICAN NETWORK THAT WILL POSSIBLY IN FUTURE BE EXTENDED TO OTHER NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES.
