Background: A Vanguard of eight officers and men of Malaya's special force for the Congo left Kuala Lumpur Sept 12.
Led by 31-year-old Major Abdul Jamil, they were briefed by the Permanent Secretary to the Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Inche Ghazali before they left Kuala Lumpur.
Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and Defence Minister Tun Abdul Razak were at Kuala Lumpur's International Airport to see the party off. The eight men will fly to London and proceed to Congo via Brussels.
The eight-men advance party will send back information on conditions in the Congo to Malaya and help with arrangements in the Congo for receiving the main body of the force.
Only European member of the special force, Major D.K. Furney, is accompanying the party. Major Furney, who has taken part in the Kenya campaign against Mau Mau, will act as the Malayan Force's senior liaison officer.
Malaya's main force of 450 officers and men are meanwhile assembling in Kuala Lumpur to fly to Congo next week.
