  • Description

THOUSAND OF BELGIANS MARCHED THROUGH BRUSSELS TODAY (SUNDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE MOVE TO SPLIT BELGIUM INTO FEDERATED LINGUISTIC REGIONS. THE MARCHERS WERE LED BY BE-MEDALLED VETERANS OF BOTH WORLD WAR WINDOWS, AND ORPHANS.

ARMED RIOT POLICE WERE ON DUTY TO PROTECT THE MARCHERS FROM ATTACKS BY FEDERALIST AND SEPARATIST SUPPORTERS WHO WANT TO DIVIDE BELGIUM INTO DUTCH-SPEAKING FLANDERS, IN THE NORTH-WEST, AND FRENCH-SPEAKING WALLONIA, IN THE SOUTH-WEST.

THERE WERE NO VIOLENT INCIDENTS DURING THE 90-MINUTES MARCH, BUT A NUMBER OF COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED. TODAY'S UNITY MARCH WAS WIDELY REGARDED IN BELGIUM AS A RETORT TO LAST OCTOBER'S FLEMISH MARCH ON BRUSSELS DURING WHICH A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WERE HURT IN CLASHES.
