Background: West German soldiers have just finished the first in a series of training sessions at a Canadian Forces' Base in the west of Manitoba Province.
About seven hundred soldiers have been at the camp since early summer. They have been involved in manouvers and testing new equipment.
The people of the nearby town of Shilo have welcomed the influx of soldiers, for they have revived (to a certain extent), flagging rural businesses in the area.
One grocery-store owner says that -- for the first time -- he will have to pay substantial income tax this year. The grocery part of his business has not increased by much...but now other schemes are bringing in the money.
The sales from the liquor section of his store have jumped dramatically. He now also operates several types of business ...just like a large corporation.
Behind the store he has established a permanent caravan site and in the front he parks the cars he now rents to the Germans. The cars stand on a concrete lot built with materials the German soldiers had left over after building work within the base.
For the first time, the store owner has been able to take a winter holiday. Next year he plans to build a miniature golf course and he and his wife plan to learn German.
