  • Description

A NORWEGIAN FREIGHTER AND AN AMERICAN COASTAL TANKER COLLIDED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) OFF THE NORTHEASTERN COAST OF THE UNITED STATES, ABOUT 10 MILES SOUTH OF THE ENTRANCE TO THE CAPE COD CANAL. AT LEAST FIVE SEAMEN WERE INJURED AND A FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE TANKER'S ENGINE ROOM.

WITH THE TWO SHIPS LOCKED TOGETHER, THE FIRE RAGED OUT OF CONTROL FOR SEVERAL HOURS, UNTIL FIRE FIGHTERS FROM COAST GUARD VESSELS BROUGHT IT UNDER CONTROL. THE TWO CREWS 40 ABOARD THE FREIGHTER AND 20 FROM THE TANKER - WERE TAKEN ABOARD THE COAST GUARD CUTTERS.

THE COLLISION OCCURRED UNDER OVERCAST SKIES, SHORTLY AFTER DAYBREAK. THE TANKER - 'DYNAFUEL' - WHICH WAS UNDER BALLAST, SETTLED ABOUT TEN FEET IN THE WATER. THE FREIGHTER - 'FERNVIEW' - WAS HEADING TOWARDS THE CANAL ENTRANCE ON ITS WAY TO BOSTON, WITH A GENERAL CARGO.

(THE CANAL IS AT THE BASE OF THE CAPE COD PENINSULA, WHICH JUTS OUT INTO THE ATLANTIC. IT ENABLES SHIPS TO AVOID THE LONG TRIP AROUND THE CAPE.)
