  • Description

An elaborate welcoming ceremony was prepared for Sudan's new Ambassador to Uganda, Major-General Mohamed Abdel Gadir, when he went to State House, Entebbe, on Tuesday (8 August) to present his credentials to President Amin.

A guard of honour was drawn up to greet Major-Genera Gadir, and after the inspection he was entertained by President Amin and senior Ugandan officials at a reception, during which there were toasts to the health of President Jafaar Numeiry of Sudan.

This highlighted a considerable improvement in relations between the two countries, which reached a low ebb when General Amin, assuming control in Uganda with a military coup, accused the Sudanese government of training Ex-President Obote's guerrillas to overthrow his regime. Sudan, in return, accused General Amin of harbouring Israelis and helping them in attacks against the Arabs.

On greeting Ambassador Gadir and accepting his credentials, President Amin spoke of a new friendship and co-operation between Uganda and Sudan. He also repeated his determination to have all British Asians and Israelis out of Uganda within three months and, as an incentive, said he would present medals to members of the government and security forces assisting his scheme. President Amin has already expelled most of the Israeli business, military and diplomatic corps in Uganda.
