Squadron Leader Maughan, 35, commands a 'Hunter' Squadron. Mr. Rylands is managing director of 'Skyways', a private Aircharter firm. Group Captain Ryder, a Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot, limped to receive his prize - while competing in the race the same day he was involved in a road accident in Paris. The BEA team of eleven men and two women were cited as having set an example by using existing facilities on the ground. yet cutting travel time between the two cities by more than two-thirds.
The Air race winner's time of 40 seconds for the 214-mile journey between the Arc and the Arch is two and a half times quicker than the time taken by the normal civil airline services.
