    HOLLANDIA IS 25 MILES FROM THE AUSTRALIAN NEW GUINEA BORDER ON THE NORTHERN COAST OF THE ISLAND, AND IS ALMOST ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS.

    THE TOWN WHICH LIES ON HUMBOLDT BAY BENEATH STEEP HILLS WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED DURING THE WORLD WAR TWO AMERICAN LANDINGS IN 1944 AFTER WHICH U.S.GENERAL MACARTHUR SET UP HEADQUARTERS AT THE REAR OF THE PRESENT TOWN.

    OF THE HUGE AMERICAN WARTIME BASE LITTLE NOW REMAINS.THE DESTROYER REPAIR BASE IS NOW A COLLECTION OF SMALL WHARVES FOR INTER-ISLAND TRADE AND LANDING CRAFT LIE RUSTING ALONG THE ONCE INVASION BEACH.

    AROUND THE POINT FROM THE CENTRE OF THE TOWN, ON A HILL OVERLOOKING THE CITY, REAR-ADMIRAL L.E.H.REESER, COMMANDER OF THE DUTCH ARMED FORCES, HAS NOW HIS HEADQUARTERS.THE PLACE ALSO HAS THE GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCE AND THE NEW GUINEA COUNCIL ASSEMBLY HALL.

    TODAY, HOLLANDIA IS THE CENTRE OF A STORM - FROM INDONESIA AND HOLLAND - OVER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF WEST NEW GUINEA.INDONESIA CALLS IT WEST IRIAN AND IS PREPARED TO GO TO WAR TO REALISE THE CLAIM.
