  • Description

The Apollo 15 spacecraft, carrying astronauts David Scott, Alfred Worden, and James Irwin, is on its way to the moon. Blastoff from Cape Kennedy on Monday (26 July) came at 1334 GMT -- precisely on time after a flawless countdown.

The astronauts completed two orbits of Earth, before reigniting the third stage of the powerful Saturn Five rocket -- boosting them on a course for the moon. They are bound for a moon landing on 30 July in a mountain-ringed northern plain, near a canyon called Hadley Rille.

It will be man's fourth expedition on the lunar surface and his fifth attempt at landing.
