  • Description

HUNDRED OF CZECHOSLOVAKS LIVING IN EXILE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, WALKER IN SILENT TRIBUTE THROUGH THE STREETS OF LONDON'S WEST END TODAY, HONOURING THE MEMORY OF JAN PALACH, THE PRAGUE STUDENT WHO BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH IN PROTEST AT THE CONTINUED SOVIET PRESENCE IN HIS HOMELAND.

WHEN THE MARCHERS REACHED THE CENOTAPH, BRITAIN'S MAJOR MEMORIAL TO THE DEAD OF TWO WORLD WARS, THEY PLACED FLOWERS AND WREATHS AROUND ITS BASE. THE CENOTAPH ITSELF WAS COVERED AS IT IS BEING RENOVATED.

AFTERWARDS, A DEPUTATION OF THE CZECHOSLOVAK MARCHERS, MANY OF WHOM WERE IN NATIONAL COSTUME, MADE THEIR WAY TO NUMBER 10, DOWNING STREET, THE OFFICIAL HOME OF BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, WHERE THEY HANDED IN A LETTER OF PROTEST.
