Background: In Vatican City, Pope John Paul the Second has appointed Archbishop Agostino Casaroli his Pro-Secretary of State to succeed Vatican Secretary of State, French Cardinal Jean Villot who died in March. Vatican sources said that Monseigner Casaroli holy city's unofficial Foreign Minister for the past twelve years would be elevated to the rank of Cardinal, later this year, and he would be confirmed in the office. Meanwhile Pope John Paul has declared blessed a French missionary and a Spanish priest in the first Beatification ceremony in his reign on Sunday (29 April). Beatification for the priest and missionary marks the first step towards sainthood.

SYNOPSIS: Pope John Paul II moved among the guests in St. Peter's Basilica giving his blessings before the start of this ceremony to declare Blessed the two nineteenth century churchmen. Later that day, in his Sunday (29 April) address to the crowd in St. Peter's Square, he prayed for Uganda and its return to peace, with reconciliation and no further blood shed.

Twenty-four Cardinals were in attendance for the Beatification of French missionary Jacques Desire Laval, and Catalan priest Francisco Coll Guitart.

Missionary Father Laval worked for twenty-three years on the island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, where he died in eighteen sixty-four. The Spanish priest, Father Guitart founded the Dominican Order of the Annunciation and died in eighteen seventy-five.

The celebration was attended by guests and foreign dignitaries, among them, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewwsagur Ramgoolam, Spanish Justice Minister Inigo Cavero Lataillade and French Minister foe the Environment Michel D'Ornano.
