    Background: A huge dinosaur fossil belonging to the Jurassic period was discovered in Hochuan County of Southwest China's Szechuan Province in 1957 on the slope of a hill called Ku Chi Hill at a height 100 metres from the ground. It measures 22 metres long and stands 3.5 metres high. The dinosaur is believed to have lived about 140 million years ago and experts estimate that it weighed between 30-40 tons. This is the biggest and best preserved fossil dinosaur hitherto found in China. Studies made by palaeontologists have revealed that it belongs to a family and species never found in the world before and have therefore given it the name of Mamenchisaurus Mochuanensis, sp. nov.
