    A FOUR-DAY STRIKE BY MERCHANT SEAMEN WHICH PARALYSED MARSEILLES PORT ENDED AT NOON TODAY (SATURDAY), WHEN THE FIRST OF NEARLY 12,000 DELAYED TRAVELLERS WERE ABLE TO LEAVE.

    THIRTEEN PASSENGER SHIPS WERE STRANDED IN THE PORT, AND MANY PASSENGERS HAD TO LIVE ON THE DOCKSIDE. THE STRIKE WAS OVER CLAIMS FOR HIGHER PAY AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS.

    AS SOON AS THE STRIKE ENDED A SHIP SAILED FOR ALGIERS. THE OTHER SHIPS WERE DUE TO LEAVE IN QUICK SUCCESSION FOR CORSICA AND NORTH AFRICAN PORTS. THE SEAMEN SAY THAT IF THEIR CLAIM IS NOT SETTLE QUICKLY, THEY WILL STRIKE AGAIN ON TUESDAY.
