  • Description

A lack of snow failed to mar the 1973 world championship snowmobile derby, held at Eagle River, Wisconsin, in the United States, on Sunday (21 January). The organisers built a track of sawdust instead.

The event was won in record time by Bob Eastman, of Roseau, Minnesota, before a crowd of more than 50,000.

Warm weather during the week preceding the annual event meant a shortage of snow. So promoters spread 60 truckloads of sawdust on the oval track.

Ten finalists roared off the starting line in their high-powered machines, but it was Eastman who took the lead at the first bend. He maintained it throughout the race, staving off a late challenge from last year's champion Mike Trapp.

At one stage, Eastman pushed his machine up to 80 miles (129 kms) an hour on the novel track. He crossed the line well ahead to claim the 6,000 dollars (2,500 pounds) first prize.

SYNOPSIS: People arrive in their thousands for an unusual American sporting event...the world championship snowmobile derby, held at Eagle River, in the state of Wisconsin. More than 50,000 fans make the trip to the small resort town that each year provides thrills and sometimes spills for their entertainment.

The line-up.... and away they go on their powerful racing machines. But this year, due to a warmer spell the previous week, the oval course had insufficient snow. The remedy was sixty truckloads of sawdust spread over the surface of the track. And it proved to be just the thing. Thirty-one-year-old Minnesota competitor Bob Eastman took the lead at the first bend...... and hung on to it throughout.

The ten finalists roared round the circuit at speeds of up to eighty miles an hour. But although the thrills were there, there were no spills for the spectators.

Eastman staved off a late challenge from last year's champion Mike Trapp to win the event in record time and to claim the six-thousand dollars first prize.

It was Eastman's eighth attempt at the championship.... his previous best being a third in nineteen-sixty-six.
