Background: AMONG THE MOST STRIKING DIPLOMATIC RESIDENCES IN CANBERRA IS THE JAPANESE EMBASSY. THE AMBASSADOR, MR. OOTA, AND MRS. OOTA, ALLOWED THEIR HOME TO BE USED AT THE WEEKEND FOR A SPECIAL FASHION PREVIEW.

IT WAS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF SHOWS TO INTRODUCE NEW MATERIALS MADE FROM JAPANESE SYNTHETIC FIBRE. THE METHOD OF PRESENTATION ALSO WAS NEW -- THE FASHIONS WERE DESCRIBED BY ONE COMMENTATOR WHILE ANOTHER TOLD THE STORY THE MODELS WERE ENACTING.

THE "FASHION PLAY" WAS INTENDED BY THE ORGANIZERS AS A PARODY OF THE CLASSIC JAPANESE NOH PLAY.

THE STORY, IN PANTOMIME, BEGAN WITH THE OVER POPULAR "BOY MEETS GIRL" THEME. THE CENTRAL FIGURES WERE A JAPANESE GIRL, AN AUSTRALIAN GIRL AND TWO MEN.

THE JAPANESE GIRL, NOT WISE TO THE WAYS OF FASHION, AT FIRST HAD DIFFICULTY IN ATTRACTING ATTENTION. BUT SHE LEARNED QUICKLY. THE RESULT WAS INEVITABLE.

MOST OF THE "COSTUMES" AT THE CANBERRA FASHION SHOW WERE WESTERN BUT THERE ALSO WERE TRADITIONAL KIMONOS AND ADAPTATIONS OF JAPANESE DRESS.
