  • Description

The Parliamentary leader of West Germany's Opposition Christian Democrats Doctor Rainer Barzel yesterday (Friday) became the first Western politician to talk with the newly installed head of Polish Communist Party Mr Edward Gierek.

Mr Geirek was named the new head of the Polish Communist Party last month following riots of food prices in North Poland.

Doctor Barzel called on him at Communist Party headquarters in Warsaw after talks with Foreign Minister Stephan Jedrychowski. The former Prime Minister Josez Cyrankiewica, now head of State, was also present at the discussions.

The West German Opposition leader has now met four members of the Communist Party's 12-man ruling Politburo. He had what a West German spokesman indicated were frank and even blunt exchanges with the present Prime Minister Mr Piotr Jaroszewicz.
