  • Description

A crowd of 300,000 people gathered at the Ohotori Shrine in Tokyo, Nov 29, to pray for more income and good luck to their families. Nov 29 was the last lucky day in the month - Rooster Day of the Japanese Zodiac.

Before going home after their prayers for good luck, thousands visited nearby shops where bamboo standards with faces of smiling women were sold. The smiling faces are lucky charms by tradition. They were bought to the accompaniment of equally traditional hand clapping. The cost of these good luck symbols, later to be decorated at home or in the office, was anything from 10 shillings to 15 pounds.
