  • Description

RIOT POLICE AND BRITISH TROOPS ALERTED BY THE NORTHERN IRELAND GOVERNMENT STOOD BY TODAY (TUESDAY) AS PROTESTANTS PARADED THROUGH LONDONDERRY, A PREDOMINANTLY ROMAN CATHOLIC CITY. THE PROTESTANTS WERE CELEBRATING A TRIUMPH OVER CATHOLICS 280 YEARS AGO. THE CITY HAS BEEN THE FOCAL POINT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY CATHOLIC MILITANTS FOR A BETTER POLITICAL AND SOCIAL DEAL FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

THE PARADE WAS ORGANISED BY THE APPRENTICE BOYS OF DERRY, PROTESTANT MEN OF ALL AGES, MARCHING TO CELEBRATE A VICTORY FOR WILLIAM OF ORANGE'S FORCES IN 1688-9 WHEN YOUNG APPRENTICES BARRED THE CITY'S GATES AGAINST CATHOLIC TROOPS.

THE MARCH BEGAN PEACEFULLY, BUT UNRULY SCENES WERE TO DEVELOP IN TODAY'S MARCH.

EARLIER, THE GOVERNMENT HAD ISSUED AN APPEAL FOR AN END TO STRIFE AND VIOLENCE. NEVERTHELESS, THE CABINET APPROVED SECURITY MEASURES ON THE ADVICE OF POLICE CHIEFS WHO FEAR TODAY'S PARADE COULD SPELL THE WORST TROUBLE IN NORTHERN IRELAND'S 10 MONTHS OF PROTESTANT-CATHOLIC CLASHES.

RIOT SQUADS TOOK UP STRATEGIC POSITIONS AROUND THE PROTESTANT CENTRE IN THE CITY'S FOUNTAIN DISTRICT AS CELEBRATION BEGAN WITH BONFIRES. THREE THOUSAND TROOPS ARE READY TO INTERVENE. POLICE STRENGTH IS THE STRONGEST THE CITY HAS YET WITNESSED.
