  • Description

THE ROYAL TOUR OF ETHIOPIA MOVED INTO TOP GEAR TODAY (TUESDAY) WITH A ROUND OF ENGAGEMENTS FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. IT STARTED WITH A TOUR OF ADDIS ABABA'S MAIN BUILDINGS AND WAS CLIMAXED BY A GARDEN PARTY, AT WHICH THERE WERE TWO THOUSAND COMMONWEALTH CITIZENS AS GUESTS.

THE GARDEN PARTY WAS A QUIET ORDERLY AFFAIR, AND TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE RIOTOUS WELCOME YESTERDAY WHEN THE QUEEN ARRIVED IN ADDIS ABABA. AN ESTIMATED QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE LINED THE ROUTE OF THE ROYAL PROGRESS AS THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, WITH EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE, RODE IN PROCESSION THROUGH THE ETHIOPIAN CAPITAL.

EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE HEADED A HOST OF DIGNITARIES AT ADDIS ABABA'S AIRPORT TO WELCOME THE ROYAL VISITORS WHEN THEY FLEW IN AFTER THEIR FLIGHT FROM LONDON. THERE WAS THE USUAL ROUND OF INTRODUCTIONS TO ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS. AFTER THIS, THE QUEEN TOOK THE SALUTE AT A MARCH PAST OF A GUARD OF HONOUR.

COLOURFUL AS THIS GREETINGS WAS, IT WAS OVERWHELMED BY THE WELCOME FROM ETHIOPIA'S ORDINARY CITIZENS AS THE QUEEN DROVE TO THE JUBILEE PALACE -- HER HOME FOR THE NEXT EIGHT DAYS. LOUD AND ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERS FROM THE DENSE CROWD ECHOED EVERY FOOT OF THE WAY.

HALF WAY THROUGH THE PROGRESS, THE QUEEN AND EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE ENTERED A CLOSED COACH FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DRIVE. PRINCE PHILIP RODE IN AN OPEN COACH WITH ETHIOPIA'S CROWN PRINCE, ASFAR WASSAN. ON THEIR ARRIVAL AT THE JUBILEE PALACE, THE QUEEN WAS PRESENTED WITH A BOUQUET.

AT NIGHT, THE VISITORS ATTENDED A STATE BANQUET IN A DINING HALL ONE HUNDRED YARDS LONG. IT WAS HERE THAT THE QUEEN PRESENTED EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE WITH A FIELD MARSHAL'S BATON - THE SECOND HEAD OF THE STATE TO BE SO HONOURED.

LATER THE QUEEN, RESPONDING TO THE EMPEROR'S SPEECH OF WELCOME, SAID THAT ETHIOPIA'S HISTORY HAD GIVEN IT A LEADING INFLUENCE IN AFRICAN AFFAIRS AT A CRITICAL TIME ON THE CONTINENT.
