  • Description

Lives are being saved using computers to help discover hidden illness, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other maladies, and to instantly provide emergency information on patients.

Tomorrow, computers may be widely used to help give more complete annual physicals. Computer-aided diagnoses may become as common as chest X-rays...And everyone's complete medical record may be stored in special computers which will make them immediately available when needed.

SYNOPSIS: A Birmingham pathologist, Dr. Albert E. Casey, has developed an advance system, now in daily use, which has detected many illnesses and diseases months or years before usual outward symptoms have appeared.

Here's how it works. A small sample of the patient's blood is delivered to a special laboratory where automatic equipment analyzes each chemical component. A large UNIVAC computer at ComputerComm, a division of Computer Servicenters, Inc., in Birmingham, Alabama, compares the results. In seconds, it produces numerical ratings which show condition of kidneys, liver, and other organs, and whether the patient may suffer from a previously undetected illness.

In emergencies, the computer also flashes critical medical information to locations linked to it by telephone lines. From the number on a medical identification card, a doctor's office or a hospital emergency room can obtain a patient's medical history from the computer in a matter of seconds.

The UNIVAC 1106 can store and constantly update complete records on over a million-and-a-half patients. Linked to it from many locations are hospitals, laboratories, clinics and physicians, and other computer centers.
