Background: Soccer, and a lucky Israeli side scraped though to a goal-less draw with South Korea on Sunday (27 February) in their opening World Cup Asian Group Two elimination match. The game was in the Ramat Gan Stadium, Tel Aviv, and a disappointed Israeli crown booed their team off the pitch at the end.

SYNOPSIS: South Korea, in the dark shirts and playing left to right, kicked off. Israel went on the attack, but couldn't press it home.

South Korea missed a number of scoring opportunities and this was one of the closer shaves for the Israeli defence. But they managed to survive.

Israel went on the attack again but it didn't last. National team coach David Schweitzer said before the game that it was important for Israel to win in order to get off to a morale-boosting start to the World Cup tournament. But it was not to be. Israel has quite a good record against South Korea - they beat them 3-1 in Seoul a year ago -- but the South Koreans ousted them from the World Cup three years earlier with a 1-nil win in a crucial qualifying match.

Half-time, and the crowd were hoping for something better, and so were the Israeli team. But they still couldn't pull off the necessary winner, and revenge their earlier World Cup beating.
