  • Description

ANOTHER CYPRUS TROUBLE SPOT. BRITISH TROOPS AND LOCAL POLICE MOVE INTO AN EAST COAST VILLAGE, SCENE THIS WEEK OF THREE DAYS OF INTER-COMMUNAL FIGHTING. THEIR MISSION: TO SEARCH THE VILLAGE AND CONFISCATE ARMS.

HERE IN AYIOS ANDRONICOS, NEAR FAMAGUSTA, GREEK CYPRIOTS HAD RINGED THE COMMUNITY, WHICH EARLIER HAD BEEN SEALED OFF BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS. THREATS OF ARMED INTERVENTION FROM SECURITY FORCES LED THE TURKISH MINORITY TO SURRENDER AND HAND IN THEIR WEAPONS.

A THOROUGH SEARCH WAS MADE OF THE VILLAGE TO MAKE SURE ALL ARMS HAD BEEN HANDED IN TO THE AUTHORITIES. A MINE DETECTOR WAS USED AFTER REPORTS THAT STREETS HAD BEEN MINED.

MAKESHIFT PILL-BOXES, FEED FOR LIVESTOCK AND HOUSES WERE ALL SEARCHED. SUSPICIOUS LOCAL CITIZENS KEPT OUT OF THE WAY. AS AN ADDED SECURITY, BRITISH ARMOURED CARS WERE BROUGHT IN, BUT REMAINED OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE.
