  • Description

A man claiming to be a deserter of the rightwing Lebanese Falangist Party, accused the party of inciting the recent fighting and the killing of Palestinians during the clashes in lebanon during a news conference he gave on Friday (18 July). But the following day, Mr Said Al Asmar denied the statement at another news conference.

Mr. Al Asmar went to the Palestine Liberation Organisation authorities and asked to meet journalists. In doing so, he joined the Palestinian commandos who refuse to surrender to the Lebanese authorities. The authorities are now allegedly looking for them and Mr Al Asmar for their part in the fighting. Mr Al Asmar talked about the fighting in Ain el Rummaneh and especially of the first incident on April 13 this year. He said he and other Falangist party (Kataeb) member had orders to attack the bus in which at least 40 Palestinians were killed.

He also accused the party of gathering and receiving weapons from outside Lebanon. He said many senior Falangists were trained in Jordan. "Jordanian students at the American University of Beirut helped the Kataeb as snipers, wearing masks," he said.

But the following day, Mr Al Asmar retracted his statements at another news conference. He pointed out scare on his body which he said were the result of torturing he had received from Palestinian commandos.

The Falangist Party has denied that Mr Al Asmar was ever one of their members.
