    An international convention, banning the dumping of poisonous industrial waste into the North Sea and North Atlantic, could follow an eleven-nation conference, which opened in Oslo on Tuesday (19 October). Government officials from Britain, Norway, Belgium, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland opened the four-day conference to discuss pollution and draft convention -- the first of its kind -- against the dumping of waste.

    A joint move to adopt a convention could provide a basis for en international fight against every form of harmful waste disposal into the sea. Norwegian officials said they hoped the Oslo conference would inspire other countries to establish regional cooperation in their fight against various forms of pollution in other parts of the world.

    SYNOPSIS: Eleven-nations opened a conference on pollution in Oslo on Tuesday. An inter-national convention, banning the dumping of poisonous industrial waste into North Sea and North Atlantic, could be one result of the discussions. Government officials from Britain, Norway, Belgium, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland are taking part. The five Nordic countries have already adopted a plan to ban all dumping into the sea. Norwegian oceanographers have warned of the effect of pollution on the reproduction of marine life in the fishing grounds of the North Sea and North Atlantic.
