Background: Motor sports...and in Kenya local drivers, Shekhar Mehta and Mike Doughty, on Monday (16 April) won the punishing Safari Rally. Driving a Japanese works Datsun 60J, they took the lead late in the final section to beat Hannu Mikkola of Finland and Arne Hertz of Sweden. Mehta, an Asian originally from Uganda, had won the 1973 rally, also in a Datsun.

SYNOPSIS: Seen here on the final section are Finnish drivers Markku Alen and Ilkka Kivimaki, in a Fiat Abarth one-three-one. They were first across the finishing line, but took third place with a total of four hundred and forty penalty points.

Car number one, piloted by Finland's Rauno Aaltonen and Kenyan co-driver Lofty Drews, was second to finish, and gained fifth place. Drews had partnered Mehta in his victory six years ago.

And here are the winners, Mehta and Doughty, being congratulated by officials. In covering the five thousand kilometres (3,000 miles), they had racked up a provisional total of three hundred and eighty seven penalty points.

Mehta put their win down to good luck and hard work.

Mrs. Mehta greets her victorious husband. First-time drivers said the Safari was the roughest and toughest they had ever encountered. Only twenty-two from a starting field of seventy-four managed to survive into the final section.
