Background: Matabeleland Southern Rhodesia, presently suffers from one of the worst droughts in her history and at Marula, near Bulawayo, many hundreds of cattle have ben entrained and railed nearly 350 miles to new grazing land, Feb 6-8.

The Matabeleland Drought Committee is to move cattle from other affected areas but this initial movement from Marula was organized promptly by a local farmer's committee before official action was taken. Marula farmers are hoping to rail about 5,000 head of cattle over the next two weeks. There is an estimated 35,000 head in the area.

Whilst the drought is causing desperation on ranches and dairy farms, and Africans fear a mounting famine, conditions in Bulawayo are normal. There is no shortage of water and should there be no further rain this season a shortage is unlikely.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture at Salisbury an immediate GBP3 million was needed for relief for drought-stricken farmers. Crop failures due to the drought were costing the country approximately GBP10 million.
