Soviet Premier Alexei N. Kosygin demanded Monday (June 19) that Israel withdraw from all occupied areas in the Arab nations so that a climate might be created for peace in the middle east.
The Soviet leader, addressing a special emergency session of the UN General Assembly, accused the United States of encouraging Israel to make war on the Arabs. He warned that renewed conflict in the Middle East could lead to nuclear war. Kosygin spoke only an hour after President Johnson of United States delivered a major foreign policy speech in which he urged the United Nations not take rigid attitudes in the search for middle east stability.
Kosygin attacked U.S. foreign policy in virtually all areas of tension in the world, from Viet Nam to Cuba but reserved his bitteres blasts for the U.S. and British roles in the drama of Israel's swift victory over the Arabs early this month.
Kosygin issued a "categorical demand" that all Israeli forces be withdrawn from the Suez Canal zone and all other occupied territories.
The Soviet Premier also said the United States and Britain encourage Israel in its war on the Arabs -- particularly through activities of U.S. Sixth Fleet.
