  • Description

Tanzania is participating in Expo '70 in Tokyo, and recently opened an Embassy in the Japanese capital.

In addition the African country put its exports on show in Tokyo on Wednesday (June 10).

More than 300 businessmen, traders and diplomats stationed in Tokyo were invited to a wide-ranging Exhibition of Tanzanian products, hosted by Mohammed A Babu, Trade and Commerce Minister of Tanzania.

Coffee is one of Tanzania's main exports, and coffee-tasting was a very popular pastime for visitors to the exhibition. The Japanese are very fond of the drink, preferring the thick, aromatic type. Tanzanian coffee is very strongly flavoured, and is a rival for the Brazilian coffee on which the Japanese used to rely.

Japan and Tanzania have been trading partners for years now, and the commercial and political relationship between the two countries has always been good. Tanzania's products are primarily agricultural, including cotton and oil-seeds as well as coffee, tea, hides and skins, sisal and tobacco.

Diamond mining and manufactured goods are increasingly important, and the country also produces rubber and plastic products, radio sets, cosmetics, and other products associated with more highly developed countries.

The Exhibition was due to continue at the Japan Trade Association Hall till June 15, and thousands of Japanese businessmen were expected to visit it during the five-day period.
