President Anwar sadat of the United Arab Republic promised yesterday (Thursday November 19) to take Egyptians into the nuclear and space age but said the battle with Israel must first be won. president Sadat was addressing the National Assembly at the opening of its first regular session since the death of President Nasser in September.
In his speech President Sadat said that the United Arab Republic seeks peace based on justice and it is prepared to accept death in defence of that principle. Let the whole world know, he said, we do not bargain and we do not trade our lands, giving up part of our territory would be the same as giving up all.
Amid loud applause the President called the Soviet Union a true friend of the U.A.R. and insisted on a complete Israeli withdrawal. He appealed for Arab unity and said the recently-announced federation with Sudan and Libya would provide the nucleus for broader union.
President Sadat asked the nation's millions to dry their tears now for the dead leader and face the future. The Government was looking into their problems, he said, and would, forge ahead with industrial development and the social services. Emphasising the role of science, education and youth, he said that the U.A.R. must step quickly into the nuclear and space age.
