    Lebanon celebrated Martyrs' Day on Saturday (May 6) to commemorate the execution of several nationalists in 1916 under the Ottoman regime. In Beirut, a ceremony in Martyrs' Square--where 14 nationalists were hanged for advocating independence and opposing Ottoman rule--was led by lebanese President Suleiman Franjeih. Members of the martyrs' families were among the large crowd that gathered, and the ceremony--during which wreaths were laid at Martyrs' Monument--was also attended by diplomats and government leaders.
