  • Description

THE COUP IN GHANA APPEARS TO HAVE BROUGHT LITTLE DISRUPTION EITHER TO GHANA OR TO THE NEIGHBOURING STATES. ALL BORDERS INTO THE COUNTRY WERE CLOSED AT DAWN ON THURSDAY WHEN THE COUP TOOK PLACE, BUT APART FROM THIS EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL. OUR CAMERAMAN IN TOGO WENT BY ROAD TO THE GHANAIAN BORDER, ONLY TWO MILES (3 KILOMETRES) AWAY FROM THE TOGOLESE CAPITAL, LOME. HE FOUND THE BORDER CLOSED, APPARENTLY ON THE ORDERS OF THE NEW REGIME. THE ONLY PERSON TO CROSS INTO GHANA WAS THE GHANAIAN CHARGE D'AFFAIRES IN LOME WHO LEFT IMMEDIATELY THE NEWS WAS RECEIVED.

TOGO HAS NOT YET MADE ANY OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE NEW REGIME IN GHANA. RELATIONS BETWEEN THE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES HAVE NOT BEEN CLOSE.

(UPPER VOLTA, GHANA'S NORTHERN NEIGHBOUR, HAS STRENGTHENED ITS BORDER PATROLS SINCE THE COUP "TO PREVENT POSSIBLE INCIDENTS". GHANA'S RELATIONS WITH UPPER VOLTA HAVE BEEN STRAINED RECENTLY AFTER THE UPPER VOLTA GOVERNMENT ACCUSED GHANA OF HARBOURING ANTI-GOVERNMENT ELEMENTS.)
