  • Description

DAHOMEY'S PRESIDENT EMILE ZINSOU HAS BEEN DISCUSSING THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR AND BIAFRAN MERCY FLIGHTS DURING INFORMAL TALKS WITH THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN LEADER, MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON.

THE TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS AT THE DODAN BARRACKS RESIDENCE OF GENERAL GOWON BEGAN SHORTLY AFTER PRESIDENT ZINSOU FLEW INTO LAGOS ON A ONE-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL.

THE TWO AFRICAN LEADERS REVIEWED DAHOMEY'S UNILATERAL AUTHORIZATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS TO FLY RELIEF SUPPLIES FROM COTONOU TO BIAFRA -- A DECISION WHICH FOLLOWED HARD BARGAINING BETWEEN PRESIDENT ZINSOU AND DR. AUGUST LINDT, FORMER RED CROSS RELIEF CO-ORDINATOR FOR WEST AFRICA.

THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN AUTHORITIES HAVE SINCE REQUIRED DR. LINDT TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.

PRESIDENT ZINSOU DESCRIBED HIS MEETING WITH GENERAL GOWON AS AN EFFORT TO SOLIDIFY RELATIONS BETWEEN DAHOMEY AND NIGERIA, AND ADDED THAT HE HAD INVITED GENERAL GOWON TO COTONOU TO CONTINUE TALKS AT THE END OF AUGUST.
