  • Description

Jindric Marek of Czechoslovakia gave his country their first stage win on the 1972 Tour Of Britain Milk Cycle Race today by winning the 109-mile (176KM) tenth stage at South Shields on Thursday (June 8).

He clocked four hours, 44 minutes and 17 seconds after just getting the better of Britain's Doug Dailey in a thrilling sprint for the finishing line.

But Frenchman Marcel Duchemin, who finished only tenth in this stage, still retains the race leader's yellow jersey through his successes in earlier stages.

Dailey spent the earlier part of the race bunched in with a group of other riders. Then after two attempts to break clear he finally got ahead with Marek for the final sprint 26 miles (41 kilometres) from the line.

SYNOPSIS: A close finish to the tenth stage of the Tour of Britain Milk cycle race as Jindric Marek of Czechoslovakia narrowly beats Britisher Dough Dailey in a final spring across the line. Marek gave his country their first stage win in this part of the race, which ended in South Shields. He and Dailey had fought it out wheel to wheel for the last 26 miles of the event.

Frenchman Marcel Duchamin, who finished tenth in this stage, remains the leader despite Marek's victory, because of his successes in the earlier stages of the race.
