  • Description

In Argentina election results are still trickling in although it is virtually certain that the country's new President will be Dr. Hector Campora...the man backed by former strongman dictator, Juan Peron.

Meanwhile, in Madrid, Senor Person said today (14 March) he will return to the Argentine as soon as possible, adding that he hopes to visit other Latin American countries and The People's Republic of China.

Although Dr. Campora failed to get the absolute majority required by the country's laws, President Lanusse has indicated that a run-off won't be necessary because of the massive vote for Campora.

But the president-elect, who rode to power on the slogan "Campora to the Presidency, Peron to power," says he won't take office on May 25th if Juan Peron is not back in Argentina by then.

SYNOPSIS: In Argentina election results are still trickling in, several days after the first elections there for almost ten year. However, it's virtually certain that the country's new ruler will be Dr. Hector Campora, the man backed by the former strongman dictator, Juan Peron. Although Dr. Campora just failed to get the legally required absolute majority, President Lanusse has indicated that a run-off won't be necessary because of the massive vote for the Doctor.

The Justicialist party won a comfortable majority in the Lower House of Congress, but half the 22 provincial Governorships will probably have to be decided in a second round run-off.

With the presidential voting virtually decided the President-elect met newsmen. Dr. Campora was Senor Peron's hand-picked candidate campaigning under the slogan "Campora to the Presidency, Peron to Power". He recalled that he was beside Senor Peron when the former President took office in 1946, and he added that "on this May 25th General Peron will also enter the Government house beside me." Dr. Campora told his supporters that he would not take office on May 25th if Juan Peron is not back in Argentina by then. In Madrid, Senor Peron has said he will return to Argentina as soon as possible.
