  • Description

HIPPIES TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) WERE STILL OCCUPYING A BUILDING IN CENTRAL LONDON DESPITE A WARNING FROM A JUDGE THAT THEY COULD FACE PROSECUTION.

HOWEVER, POLICE TONIGHT SEALED OFF THE BUILDING AND REFUSED TO LET ANYONE ENTER IT--EVEN THE SPOKESWOMAN FOR THE SQUATTERS, 17-YEAR-OLD DENISE HALLORAN.

EARLIER TODAY A JUDGE GRANTED AN APPLICATION FOR AUTHORITIES TO REPOSSESS THE BUILDING FROM THE SQUATTERS.

MISS HALLORAN, WHO REPRESENTED THE SQUATTERS IN COURT, ASKED FOR A WEEK'S ADJOURNMENT TO PREPARE A LEGAL CASE--BUT THE JUDGE, MR. JUSTICE SHAW, GRANTED HER ONLY ONE HOUR. AT THE END OF THE HOUR SHE SAID SHE HAD NOT HAD TIME TO PREPARE A CASE.

IN GRANTING THE REPOSSESSION ORDER MR. JUSTICE SHAW SAID THE HIPPIES HAD BROUGHT THEMSELVES WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE CRIMINAL LAW OF CONSPIRACY, AND THAT THEY COULD BE TRIED AND PUNISHED AS CRIMINALS. HE ADDED THAT SQUATTERS WHO THOUGHT THEY WERE PROTECTED BY A 14TH CENTURY LAW WERE MISTAKEN.

THE REPOSSESSION ORDER WAS GRANTED TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE LONDON DIOCESAN BOARD OF EDUCATION WHO ARE PLANNING TO SELL THE BUILDING.

THE HIPPIES HAVE BEEN OCCUPYING THE BUILDING FOR 11 DAYS.
