    Background: ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

The Yugoslav President Petar Stambolic, headed a top-level delegation which arrived for a three-day state visit to Ethiopia on October 29. At Bole International Airport in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, the President was welcomed by the Ethiopian Head of State, Lieutenant-Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. Several members of the Yugoslav community were also at the airport to greet President Stambolic and he spoke to them briefly. He and Colonel Mengistu watched a military march-past of Ethiopian troops before leaving the airport. The two leaders will discuss African and world issues and review the preparations for the seventh non-aligned summit in India next year. Proposals for further economic co-operation between Yugoslavia and Ethiopia were also on the agenda. There are plans for a possible joint investment and industrial co-operation scheme, such as a Yugoslav-sponsored 80 million US dollar project in the Wellegea region of western Ethiopia. Local press reports, however, said the volume of trade between the two countries had decreased over the last 12 months.
