    FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BIAFRAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN ON THE ALERT, EXPECTING A POSSIBLE ASSAULT BY FEDERAL FORCES ON THE CITY. THREE WEEKS AGO THERE WERE A NUMBER OF AIR RAIDS ON THE CITY, CAUSING THE EVACUATION OF A NUMBER OF CIVILIANS.

    AS WELL AS BEING A MAJOR INDUSTRIAL CENTRE AND OIL TERMINAL, PORT HARCOURT ALSO SERVES AS A MARKET CENTRE FOR THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY.

    IT IS ALSO THE CENTRE OF NIGHT LIFE FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS, AND YOUNG PEOPLE. NIGHT CLUBS ARE AMONG THE MOST POPULAR PLACES OF ENTERTAINMENT, AND ATTRACT HUNDREDS OF CUSTOMERS KEEN TO HAVE THEIR ATTENTIONS TEMPORARILY DIVERTED FROM NIGERIA'S CIVIL STRIFE.

    PORT HARCOURT HAS A POPULATION OF MORE THAN 72-THOUSAND.
