  • Description

The first practice was held on Wednesday (9 June) for the 24-hour Le Man motor race to be held on Saturday (12 June).

SYNOPSIS: The field was dominated by 26 Porsches but the Alpine Renault A44 driven by Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jabouil was fastest. It clocked three minutes 33.1 seconds for the circuit ahead of the Porsche 936 of West German Rolf Stommelen and Belgian Jacky Ickx.

Derek Bell, in a GTC Mirage clocked three minutes 51.1 seconds for the circuit. This was almost six seconds better than the time turned in by Jean-Pier Beltoise. The Frenchman had broken the little finger of his left hand when he caught it in the driving wheel of his private car on arrival at the track. But his finger was put in a splint and he will be able to compete in the gruelling round-the-clock race.

The first all-Australian Le Mans team of Brian Muir and Peter Brock clocked times of between four minutes thirty seconds and four minutes 58 seconds in their BMW.
