  • Description

Big crowds cheered the start of the annual international four-day marching marathon in Nijmegan July 21.

Twelve nations including Britain, France, W. Germany, Israel, USA sent 14,000 marchers - a record number.

In the march were both solider and civilians. They paraded first in the Goffertstadium before the flags of their nations, then put their best foot forward for the four-day march out and back into Nijmegen.

Children along the route tagged themselves onto 1400 British soldiers swinging along in time to Scottish bagpipers.

Lone civilians plodded under rucksacks, smart Israeli women soldiers strode by. Then, U.S. troops, young Swiss soldiers under the Helvetica Cross, a sturdy corps of nurses, West German troops in Africa Korps-style hats, banded together under the slogan of friendship.
