The Vice Chancellor of Nairobi University, Dr. J. N. Karanja, has announced concessions to students?

  • Description

The Vice Chancellor of Nairobi University, Dr. J. N. Karanja, has announced concessions to students in an unprecedented move to ease tension on the troubled campus.

Dr. Karanja announced the postponement of exams and said the head of the Department of Architecture, Professor Jorgenson, would be relieved of his post. The students has earlier demanded that Professor Jorgenson step down before they would taken their exams.

In the last week of February, the University had been closed down and the students sent home following serious riots on the campus. The riots had been sparked off by the alleged expulsion of 150 students from the Department of Architecture. The student demonstrations were broken up by police in riot gear using tear gas.

A number of students were arrested in the rioting, and on Saturday (16 March) Dr. Karanja announced that a Senior Magistrate had released five of them, after the Government had dropped charges against them. He also told more than 4,000 students gathered in the University's Great Court that police would no longer be called to the campus.

The Kenyan government has been concerned about the incidents at the University. The country's Minister of Education rold the National Assembly last week that there would be an investigation into last month's closure. Some members of the Assembly had been critical of the Vice-Chancellor's handling of the campus disturbances, but the Minister of Education, Mr. Taita Towett, said that the grave situation warranted police intervention.
