THE JOURNALIST, 32-YEAR-OLD HSUEH PING OF THE NEW CHINA NEWS AGENCY, WAS ARRESTED AND SENTENCED 16 MONTHS AGO ON CHARGES OF TAKING PART IN AN UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY AND TAKING PART IN AN INFLAMMATORY CEREMONY.

    ABOUT 20 PEOPLE WEARING RED MAO BADGES AND WAVING COPIES OF THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN MAO TSE OF THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA, GREETED HSUEH AS HE LEFT A PRISON BUS WHICH HAD TAKEN HIM FROM STANLEY PRISON.

    HSUEH PROTESTED AT HIS TRIAL THAT HE HAD BEEN COVERING THE RIOTS FOR HIS NEWS AGENCY, AND THAT HE HAD BEEN ILLEGALLY KIDNAPPED BY POLICE. HIS ARREST SENTENCE WAS FOLLOWED BY THE DETENTION OF MR. ANTHONY GREY, THE BRITISH-BORN REUTER CORRESPONDENT IN PEKING. MR. GREY, ARRESTED ON JULY 21 LAST YEAR, IS STILL UNDER HOUSE ARREST.
